Biography
Gabriela works as a cybersecurity specialist and information security officer at Luxembourg House of Cybersecurity. She advocates methods to assess and improve the cybersecurity posture of SMEs by using open source tools as well as using cybersecurity standards and employing privacy-friendly practices. Gabriela holds a PhD in information security (2011), is a Certified Information Systems Auditor (2019) and an ISO/IEC 27001 Lead Implementer (2024).
She started her journey in cybersecurity as a software developer for an antivirus company called Avira GmbH. During her MSc work she got interested in the security of distributed systems, so she then became a computer security researcher working on the ways in which computer networks can be made to enforce security policies, the tradeoffs between security and performance, as well as security metrics. While in Luxembourg, Gabriela’s research delved into other areas such as IPv6-enabled open source clouds, troubleshooting in software defined networks, cryptography in eHealth and IoT security. She then turned to industry and became a consultant and trainer in privacy and data protection. She worked for 4 years as a manager and senior manager at PwC Luxembourg, helping large financial clients understand and implement GDPR requirements, and set the foundations for a long-term privacy and cybersecurity culture.
